Definitely go for it! Speaking from a coach's perspective, we often have somebody we weren't expecting surprise us at captain tryouts. Also, even if you don't make it, you might make a positive impression on your coach so s/he will consider you for a leadership position next year.
Also, one thing you could do is go to your coach and ask what s/he's looking for in a captain and what s/he thinks you need to work on. That will give you an idea of what you need to overcome and also show your coach that you're serious about wanting the position and improving your skills, whetehr they're leadership, flag or organization.
