Hi, I"m Muscles (at least that's what the gurard calls me), and I'm a sophmore in my HS guard. Yeah, 5'5 poles is what we used in MS, that's a good height, and in HS we use 6', so that's exactly what I would have said. I'd go with the nylon silks cuz the lame tend to rip really easily. Last year we used them and since there's 26 in our guard and we had a fast show, they ripped all the time, maybe 3 a night! Our guard mom who sewed the flags pretty much hated us for that by the end of the season. You'd have to use simple buttonless uniforms if you used lame also, and it's more expensive. Also, try to get the girls opinions on show themes and music because if they like the show, they'll like to practice it more. Start off with simpler moves and then maybe get more complicated after a while when they get more experienced (this could take years though, so be warned). Try to be a supportive coach because if the guard is all friends, they will work better and probably do better, so support them and basically become their friend, and try to have them be friends too. Our guard used to separate into groups of friends, and we were in class A, but when we started to work together, we went from A to World in only 1 season! I guess, just try your best, and whatever happens, you'll know you did the best you could. Hope I helped!
