: If you are looking for a cost effective way to buy poles, go to your local hardware store and buy aluminum shower curtain rods. If you weight the ends properly, you will have the closest things possible to actual poles!
We've never had the money to buy equipment other than weapons- plain aluminum pipes are what we used to use but these are hard to find, although they're cheaper than poles labeled as "shower rods". We just cut them with a regular saw, file the ends, slip on a silk, tape over the exposed pole and add a bolt and crutch tip (which can be purchased from a hardware store or a guard catalogue). For swing flags we use dowels, for really big flags you don't toss (in fall guard) we use PVC, and we also use fabric held between PVC as props or painted insulation foam board as props in winter guard.
