Hi! I identified withg you right away because I was Drum Major my senior year in high school, and did Winter Guard during second semester. That's why I wanted to write you. There is a difference between spinning the mace/military baton and spinning a flag. For a flag, the spins and flourishes are much different. It is really hard to explain in writing but there is a bit more rolling (of the hands adn fingers) in spins with the mace then there is with a flag. I learned a little bit of flag work before I learned the mace and it just confused me a lot. But when I went from mace to flag, it was a lot easier. So, if you can get help from a flag twirler, that's great but it's generally not the same. And be careful, speaking from first hand experience~it hurts worse to be bopped in the head by a mace/military baton then it does with a flag!!! I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I hope it helps. Good Luck this year as Drum Major~it was one of the best experiences of my life in which I will never forget. Just remember to have fun! If you have any other questions or help, just e-mail me and I will be more than happy to help! What school are you going to? How many are in your band? Color Guard? What is your show this year? Anyway, I hope you have a great year and have fun!
Sincerely,
Rae
