Help. I want to try out for flag team this year!!

Hey, I'm going into 8th grade, and I want to try out for flag team this year, it looks like fun. Right now I've been twirling an old hockey stick around, I mean it's better than nothing.

Does anyone know what I could do to practice?
Oh, and how many girls usually are on a flag team?
